Gimp Cloth Texture Tutorial

Welcome to the Cloth Texture Tutorial

Open gimp. Go to File > New...

In the Create a New Image window using the following settings

Image Size
Width: 512
Height: 512

Click OK

cloth 1          cloth texture ex 1

At the top of the main window go to Filters > Render > Clouds > Plasma...

In the Plasma window use the default settings:

Random seed: 0
Randomize unchecked
Turbulence: 1.0

Click OK

cloth 2          cloth texture ex 2

Since we want to make the cloth texture one color we are going to desaturate the image for now.
At the top of the main window go to Colors > Desaturate...

In the Desaturate Window pick Choose shade of gray based on Average.

Click OK

cloth 3          cloth texture ex 3

To make it look more like cloth we will adjust the contrast.
You can do this by going to Colors > Brightness-Contrast...
In the Brightness-Contrast window use the following settings:

Brightness: 23
Contrast: -80

Click OK

cloth 4          cloth texture ex 4

Next we will add lines to make it look more like fabric.
Gimp makes this nice and easy for us.  Go to Filters > Artistic > Clothify...
In the Script-Fu: Clothify window use the following settings:

Blur X: 38
Blur Y: 38
Azimuth: 135
Elevation: 45
Depth: 3

Click OK

As I usually say the best textures are the seamless ones because they give you more flexibility.
So to make it seamless go to Filters > Map > Make Seamless.

Now to save the image.  I always use Save As instead of just Save because I often create different variations of

the same texture.
So by using Save As I do not have to worry about accidentally over writing the original.
Go to File > Save As...

A window titled Save As should pop up.  At the time top rename your texture to what ever you want to call it.
After the name type .png
After renaming it choose where you would like the it to be saved to by clicking the appropriate folder.

*You can see the other file types that gimp lets you export into by click the plus sign next to where it says +

Select File Type (By Extension).

Click Save

The Save as PNG window should pop up.  Use the following settings:

Interlacing (Adam 7): Unchecked
Save background color: Checked * you can leave it unchecked if you want
Save layer offset: Unchecked
Save resolution: Checked
Save creation time: Checked
Save comment: Checked
Compression Level: 9

Click Save

Go into Second Life then Click

File > Upload > Image (L$10)...

Locate the file you saved earlier then click on it and click open.

Once you see your texture click Upload (L$10)

One last thing I like to do with all the textures I upload is change the properties so that other people have full

permission to copy and transfer the item later.
Find the texture in your inventory then right click on it and go to properties.

In the properties window down where it says Next owner can:

check the boxes Modify, Copy, and Resell/Give away.

Now your cloth texture is ready to use.  Enjoy!!
